May 23, 2008:

Now I finally have some pictures of "Amber". I am stumped by her color. She is not like any other foal we ever had. At first I was sure, that she is going to be black. It is very hard to see on these pictures, but her body color is very weird, unlike any black based foal I ever had. To make things really interesting, her skin under the body hair is pink. So what is she? Any ideas, suggestions? Whatever the color, she is gorgeous. Very friendly and quite the mover. She loves to run and is doing an amazing slow rocking chair canter lots of the time.

Finally the much anticipated Champagne Look foal out of Equinox Little Suzie arrived. We did get the filly we wanted and she is awesome. There has been much discussion about her color and I am waiting for the rain to quit for her first pictures. Her name is "Equinox Look's Amber" in honor of Little Suzies former owner Amber Applegate.

Just in time for the family barbeque, born right at supper time, the first colt of 2008. "Equinox Simon Says", by Equinox Rawhide's Aragon out of Desert Gold. He is a very light sorrel, maybe even palomino, small star and snip, one sock. Beautiful big boy, too dark to take pictures now, hopefully tomorrow.

We just had our second 2008 baby. Born this a.m. by Rowdy Rawhide's Reckless out of Equinox Betty. A very pretty and feminine little filly. She is bay with just a tiny star, a dorsal stripe and a little white on her feet. What an energetic little thing she is, Wow! We have not come up with a name for her, so once again, please send some suggestions. I will try to post some better pictures later, if the weather holds.

We decided to name our first filly of the year: "Equinox Dancer's Crystal". Thanks for all the nice name suggestions, they were all much appreciated. Now that all the snow is finally gone, Crystal gets to be outside day and night and she is doing great. The storm and her exciting first moments never slowed her down one bit. She is friendly, curious and growing like a weed. She needs a friend to play with really bad, but she will have to wait a while before the next baby arrives.

April 23, 2008:

We are very pleased to announce the birth of our first foal this year:

Dots filly 3 days old

A filly, born April 19/08, dark bay
Sire: Equinox Dancer
Dam: Equinox Dot

This healthy and happy little girl had the bad fortune to be born in a freak snowstorm, that raged over northern Alberta for 3 days. It brought 4 foot snowdrifts, horrendous roads and arctic temperatures. Welcome to winter all over again!
When her mother started to look like she would foal, we considered the options: Put her in the barn and have her really upset or start continuous surveillance and leave her outside to foal. We decided to watch her real close and be prepared. After the sun went down, the temperatures dropped to -12 Celsius with a howling wind (the snow was falling sideways). The wind chill was brutal. By 9:30 p.m. it was clear that Dot was going to foal. Out came the bath towels and wool blankets ... Her water broke by 10:00 p.m. and within a very short time the baby was born with me right there wrapping the little one in towels and blankets (her hind legs were still in the mare). Within five minutes we had her on a toboggan and safely in the warm barn. The baby got up within half an hour and it didn't take her long to find the milk bar. Both mare and filly are doing great and neither one has suffered any ill effects from this cool birth. They enjoy their daily outings in the snow and the little one sure learned how to use her legs in the deep white stuff. Fortunately baby came equipped with a full coat of winter hair, so I don't have to worry about her freezing to death outside.
The nasty weather lasted two more days and left a real mess. We could not get out of the yard for days and even though we had a cat clearing the yard today, we still have tons of snow laying around. What a storm!

Now this little girl needs a good name and we are open for suggestions.
